The SMA Power Sets consists of optimally tailored components building a powerful and efficient AC-coupled photovoltaic off-grid system. They are suitable for a wide range of applications. Power may be supplied to remote homes, offices, hospitals or holiday residences.
The intelligent power management optimally uses the existing energy resources and ensures a maximum life time of the battery. Due to the robust design of the components these systems may also be operated even under extreme climates. Thus, a reliable power supply is guaranteed at all times and wherever it is needed.
The coupling of both, the power sources and consumers on the AC side allows for the utilisation of an already existing infrastructure and simplifies an on-site installation. Furthermore, additional energy sources, such as PV, wind and hydro power, fuel cells or chp plants may be easily integrated. Since - depending on weather conditions and the season - the full potential of the renewables will not be available all the time, fuel generators or any other AC source may be connected for backup power supply.

Functional principle
The main component of the SMA Power Sets is the bi-directional stand-alone battery inverter Sunny Island. Together wit the battery bank, the Sunny Island creates an AC voltage grid into which all components - from electrical appliances to power generators - can be integrated. In order to increase the output of the AC grid, the entire system may be upgraded up to 6.6kW 1- and 3-phase by parallelling several Sunny Island 2224 inverters.
The Sunny Remote Control is required to put the Sunny Island battery inverter into operation and to inform the user about the current system status.
The solar generator is connected to the system on the DC side via the Sunny Island Charger. The controller is automatically adjusted by the Sunny Island inverter and thus guarantees an optimal battery charging.
The Sunny Island can also be combined with further energy sources by means of the Sunny Boy and Windy Boy inverters via the AC grid. Furthermore fuel generators can be connected to the system and controled by the Sunny Island in a particulary fuel-saving manner.
A DC fuse disconnector provides additional safety during installation as well as when operating the system.
System performance
The actual energy made available by the SMA Power Set depends on the geographic location of the installation site. In Central Europe, a constant solar power supply throughout the year is not possible, because of the poor insolation during winter months. According to the application it is recommended to reduce the consumption during these months or to use a conventional power generator to fill the gap. In Southern Europe, the seasonal variations are less distinct and, depending on the site of installation, the energy requirement may be covered entirely by solar power.
For example, the SMA Power Set XXS is ideal for providing energy to smaller remote holiday homes in Southern Europe. With a power output of 2.2 kW the system ensures the operation of all important AC consumers. The volume of usable energy that is made available by the 760Wp solar generator, amounts to 1.000 kWh a year, at an average global irradiation of 5kWh/m² per day. The battery capacity of 8.5 kWh assures a system autonomy between 2 and 3 days, depending on the energy consumed. We recommend the use of a diesel generator of min. 3 kW in order to make up for seasonal variations and to serve as a backup power supply.
