The set "Hybrid Power W-04" combines both wind and solar generator and is thus the ideal solution for 230V AC off-grid power supply. By making use of wind power, energy is not only produced when the sun is shining, but even when it is stormy weather and also at night. Especially during the winter months where solar insolation is weak, more energy will be available.
The wind generator Ampair 300 which is included in this set has a maximum power output of 300W at 12.6 m/s wind speed. It is suitable for locations with medium to strong winds. In order to charge the batteries, the wind turbine comes with an external charge regulator with built-in rectifier and dump load. In addition the charge controller is equipped with a current meter and stop switch to brake the turbine for maintenance or during heavy storm conditions.
The "Hybrid Power W-04" is suitable for a wide range of applications, in particular for remote summer houses and weekend homes. You may connect AC consumers up to 1600W continuous load and 4.8kW short-term peak load. The excellent overload capability as well as the true sine wave of the inverter guarantees a safe and trouble-free operation of all consumers such as lighting, TV, video/DVD, radio, water pump, power drill, coffee machine, refrigerator etc.
In addition to the solar modules and wind generator, the public grid or a fuel generator can be connected to the system as power respectively charging source. The entire system may thus be able to maintain an uninterruptible power supply, even during months with low insolation and poor wind conditions. A built-in change-over contact allows an automatic start and stop of the grid or generator power source.

Functional Principle

The solar/wind set "Hybrid Power W-04" consists of the following main components: inverter/charger unit, solar modules, wind generator with charge controller (incl. rectifier) as well as battery and battery connection box (BAE).
The charge regulator, which is integrated in the inverter unit, takes care that the energy produced by the solar modules or by the AC power source is stored in the batteries. It protects the battery bank against harmful overload and, in combination with an intelligent charging algorithm, it guarantees a long lifetime of the batteries.
The wind generator produces AC current with unsteady voltage and frequency. The wind charge controller with built-in rectifier converts the oscillating current into smooth DC current and charges the battery. It is additionally equipped with a stop switch to brake (short-circuiting) the wind generator at heavy storms or in case servicing is required.
The inverter transforms the energy produced by the solar modules and wind generator or by the AC power sources, which is stored in the battery bank, into 230V AC power. It also prevents the battery from being deep discharged by disconnecting consumer loads in case of a low battery level.
As the energy is buffered in the battery, power is available at all times, even at night or during cloudy weather.
The battery circuit breaker provides additional safety during installation and operation of the power system.
Each single component of the power set matches up the other ones perfectly. The integration of inverter and charge regulator, the tailored solar mounting system as well as the pre-fabricated cabling with plug socket reduce installation work to a minimum.
A subsequent upgrading of the set is possible at any time without having to replace any of the existing components!
Power Output and Available Energy
It is difficult to predict the output of a wind powered hybrid system due to the fact that the available amount of wind force is subject to enormous natural variations. Unlike for the solar energy, no nation-wide measuring data is available for the wind energy sector. As a rule it does not make sense to interpolate different measured values as the power of the wind is highly depending on local conditions.
It is not possible to rely solely on wind energy but in a region offering absolutely consistent wind conditions. That is not the case for most landlocked regions, thus a combination of solar and wind generator in one single system is the perfect solution. This is especially true if energy is consumed throughout the year which means either in early spring and late autumn or even during the dark winter month. However, in order to provide an uninterruptible power supply even in case of poor insolation and calm winds, a conventional power generator can be connected to the system.
The adjacent curve shows the power output of a Ampair 300 wind generator as a function of the average wind speed. You may notice that even small changes in wind speed can have a dramatic effect on power production.
The actual energy made available by the combined solar/wind power system depends enormously on the location of the installation site.
In Central Europe the global radiation is subject to great seasonal fluctuations. That's why the output of photovoltaic power systems differs very much from summer to winter months. A wind generator may compensate these disparities as especially in the winter months or if the sky is cloudy, the wind conditions are more favourable.
These seasonal fluctuations are less distinct in the southern part of Europe. Thus a wind generator erected along the coastline with stable wind conditions may contribute a considerable part to the energy production, both in the summer and the winter months.
Below, please find a chart showing the daily energy that may be available for Central Europe and Southern Europe.
Average daily available energy: Central Europe - landside

In case the energy production exceeds the consumption (e.g. weekend application), excess solar power will be stored in the battery. Once the battery is fully charged the following amount of energy is available:
Available energy at fully charged battery*

In any case, before buying this system, check carefully if your requirements are met, in particular if the power set matches the projected consumer profile. Please, also refer to our FAQs for further information or contact us directly.
Siting and Installation of the Wind Generator
The siting of your wind turbine should be carefully considered in order to order to optimize the output. In general the wind generator should be mounted as high and as far as possible from obstacles such as trees or buildings. If this rule is not observed, turbulences may heavily affect the proper operation of the wind generator. Turbulences do not only reduce efficiency but may even accelerate wear on rotating components.
Please also take into account, that the turbine may produce noise at elevated wind speeds or caused by vibrations of the mounting structure. This is why you should avoid mounting the wind generator on the roof structure. In case the wind generator has to be installed on a building, it is preferable to fix it to an outside wall.
As a rule, small wind generators with a pole height of up to 10 metres do not need to be licensed in most cases. However, we recommend contacting the local building authority if you live in a densely populated residential area.
The construction of the pole is rather simple which allows to assembling it by yourself. The mast can be made of a 2 inch (schedule 40) steel or aluminium pipe, e.g. a water pipe. Freestanding poles of up to 8 metres height should be guyed at least once. The guy wires should be fixed about 70cm below the generator. An addtional tilting hinge eases erection and maintenance. If the generator is fixed to the outside wall, all which is required are some pipe clamps with absorber elements to reduce vibrations.
